How to Calculate Marks Percentage for Matric, Inter and University Exams

Quick Answer

Marks percentage = (obtained marks ÷ total marks) × 100. For example, 850 out of 1100 is 850 ÷ 1100 × 100 = 77.27%. Always use the total marks printed on your own result card.

Overview

Most Pakistani forms, from university admissions to job applications, ask for your marks as a percentage. Board results for Matric (SSC) and Intermediate (HSSC) show obtained and total marks, so you often need to convert them yourself. This calculator takes your obtained marks and total marks and returns two numbers: your percentage (to two decimals) and the marks remaining to a perfect score. It works for board exams, university annual-system results, entry tests and class tests.

How It Works

1. Enter your obtained marks, exactly as shown on the result card. 2. Enter the total marks for the same exam. 3. Calculate. The tool divides obtained by total, multiplies by 100 and rounds to two decimals. It also shows "Remaining Marks" (total minus obtained). The tool does not stop you entering obtained marks above the total, so check both numbers come from the same exam.

Formula Summary

**Percentage = (obtained marks ÷ total marks) × 100** **Remaining marks = total marks − obtained marks** To combine several exams (e.g. Part I and Part II), add all obtained marks and all total marks first, then apply the formula once. | Exam | Obtained | Total | |---|---|---| | Part I | 430 | 550 | | Part II | 455 | 550 | | **Combined** | **885** | **1100** | Combined percentage = 885 ÷ 1100 × 100 = **80.45%**

Worked Example

Hamza scored 1,012 out of 1,200 in his board exam. Percentage = 1,012 ÷ 1,200 × 100 = 84.333… → **84.33%** Remaining marks = 1,200 − 1,012 = **188** If a form asks for marks rounded to a whole number, write 84% unless the form says to round up. Many forms ask for exact marks as well, so keep the original figures.

Interpretation

A percentage only means something against the cut-off you are comparing it to. University merit formulas in Pakistan often mix Matric, Inter and entry-test marks with different weights, so check the admission notice for the exact formula. For university semester results on a 4.0 scale, do not convert GPA by multiplying. HEC's equivalence table gives the minimum percentage for each grade band (e.g. 3.00 = 71%). Use the GPA or CGPA calculator for that. Grades on board certificates (A+, A, B, etc.) are set by each board. Check your board's result card or website for its grading key.

Editorial Note

The formula here is standard arithmetic; the worked examples were checked by hand. Board grading keys, total marks and university merit formulas differ, so always follow your board's result card and the admission notice. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Key Points

  • - Percentage = obtained ÷ total × 100.
  • - Use the total marks printed on your own result card, not a total from someone else's board or year.
  • - To combine exams, add marks first, then divide. Do not average percentages of exams with different totals.
  • - Keep two decimals for forms that ask for them.
  • - GPA/CGPA to percentage follows HEC's table, not this formula.

Common Uses

  • - Converting Matric or Inter marks to percentage for admission and job forms.
  • - Checking eligibility against a minimum percentage (e.g. 60% in Inter).
  • - Combining Part I and Part II marks.
  • - Working out the score from an entry test or class test.
  • - Seeing how many marks you lost.

Common Mistakes

  • - **Averaging percentages with different totals.** 80% of 550 and 90% of 1100 do not average to 85%. Add the marks: (440 + 990) ÷ 1650 = 86.67%.
  • - **Using the wrong total.** Total marks vary by board, group and year. Use the figure on your result card.
  • - **Including practical marks inconsistently.** If obtained marks include practicals, the total must too.
  • - **Rounding too early.** Round only the final percentage.
  • - **Using this formula for CGPA.** CGPA × 25 is not HEC's method. Use HEC's equivalence table.

Faqs

How do I calculate percentage of marks?

Divide obtained marks by total marks and multiply by 100. For example, 850 ÷ 1100 × 100 = 77.27%.

How do I calculate combined Part I and Part II percentage?

Add the obtained marks of both parts and the total marks of both parts, then divide and multiply by 100.

Should I round 79.5% to 80%?

Only if the form or institution says so. Many admissions use exact percentages, so write the two-decimal figure when allowed.

Can I convert CGPA to percentage with this calculator?

No. Use HEC's equivalence table, which gives a minimum percentage per grade band, or your university's own formula.

Does this include grace marks?

Enter marks as printed on the final result card. If grace marks were added there, they are already included.
