How to Calculate Semester GPA on the 4.0 Scale (HEC Formula and Example)
Quick Answer
Semester GPA is the credit-weighted average of your course grade points: multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add the results, then divide by the total credit hours. For example, a 4.00 in a 3-credit course and a 2.00 in a 1-credit lab give (12 + 2) ÷ 4 = 3.50, not 3.00.
Overview
GPA (Grade Point Average) is your result for one semester. Pakistani universities report it on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale, as recommended by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
This calculator takes each course's grade and credit hours and returns two numbers: your semester GPA and the total credit hours counted. Use "Add Course" for every subject on your result card.
Use it to check your result before it is announced, verify a result card, or see which course is pulling your GPA down. To combine several semesters, use the CGPA calculator.
How It Works
1. Enter the course name (optional, for your reference).
2. Pick the letter grade from the dropdown. Each grade carries a fixed number of points (see the note below on the dropdown scale).
3. Enter the course's credit hours, e.g. 3 for a theory course or 1 for a lab.
4. Click "Add Course" for each further course, then calculate.
The tool multiplies each grade point by its credit hours (the "quality points"), adds them, and divides by the total credit hours. The result is rounded to two decimals.
**Important:** the dropdown uses a common US-style point scale, not HEC's. If your transcript prints different points for a grade, your real GPA may differ slightly (see interpretation).
Worked Example
Ayesha's semester result (15 credit hours):
| Course | Grade (dropdown) | Points | Credit hours | Points × credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Structures | A | 4.00 | 3 | 12.00 |
| DS Lab | A | 4.00 | 1 | 4.00 |
| Linear Algebra | B+ | 3.30 | 3 | 9.90 |
| Digital Logic | B | 3.00 | 3 | 9.00 |
| Pakistan Studies | B- | 2.70 | 2 | 5.40 |
| Technical Writing | C+ | 2.30 | 3 | 6.90 |
| **Total** | | | **15** | **47.20** |
GPA = 47.20 ÷ 15 = 3.1467 → **3.15**
A simple average of the six grade points would be 19.30 ÷ 6 = **3.22**. That is wrong, because the 1-credit lab counts as much as a 3-credit course.
If Ayesha's university uses 3.33 for B+ and 2.67 for B- (common in Pakistan), the total becomes 47.23 and the GPA is still 3.15, but larger differences appear when many courses have minus/plus grades.
Interpretation
**HEC grade bands (Policy Guidelines for the Uniform Semester System, §13.1):**
| Grade | Grade points | Percentage (semester system) |
|---|---|---|
| A | 3.67 – 4.00 | 85 and above |
| A- | 3.34 – 3.66 | 80 – 84 |
| B+ | 3.01 – 3.33 | 75 – 79 |
| B | 2.67 – 3.00 | 71 – 74 |
| B- | 2.34 – 2.66 | 68 – 70 |
| C+ | 2.01 – 2.33 | 64 – 67 |
| C | 1.67 – 2.00 | 61 – 63 |
| C- | 1.31 – 1.66 | 58 – 60 |
| D+ | 1.01 – 1.30 | 54 – 57 |
| D | 0.10 – 1.00 | 50 – 53 |
| F | 0.00 | Below 50 |
**Where the calculator's dropdown does not match HEC:**
| Dropdown option | Dropdown points | HEC position |
|---|---|---|
| A+ (4.00) | 4.00 | HEC has no A+ grade. A covers 3.67–4.00. |
| A- (3.70) | 3.70 | HEC A- is 3.34–3.66. 3.70 falls in HEC's **A** band. |
| B+ (3.30) | 3.30 | Inside HEC B+ (3.01–3.33), but many Pakistani transcripts use 3.33. |
| B- (2.70) | 2.70 | HEC B- is 2.34–2.66. 2.70 falls in HEC's **B** band. |
| C+ (2.30) | 2.30 | Inside HEC C+ (2.01–2.33), but often 2.33 on transcripts. |
| C- (1.70) | 1.70 | HEC C- is 1.31–1.66. 1.70 falls in HEC's **C** band. |
| D+ | missing | HEC has D+ (1.01–1.30); the dropdown has no option for it. |
| D (1.00), F (0.00) | 1.00 / 0.00 | Match HEC. |
So the dropdown is a US-style scale (A- = 3.70, B+ = 3.30). If your university prints grade points on the transcript, those points are what count. HEC's guidelines set 2.00 as the minimum CGPA to complete a BS and 2.50 for MS/MPhil.
Editorial Note
This guide follows HEC's Policy Guidelines for the Implementation of Uniform Semester System. The calculator's dropdown points were read from the live tool and compared with HEC's bands. The worked examples were checked by hand. Your university's transcript and examination rules always come first. Last reviewed: October 2026.
Key Points
- - GPA is credit-weighted. A simple average of grade points is usually wrong.
- - HEC recommends a 0.00–4.00 scale.
- - The calculator's dropdown uses US-style points (A- 3.70, B+ 3.30, B- 2.70, C- 1.70) and has no D+. HEC's bands differ.
- - Use the grade points printed on your transcript when they differ from the dropdown.
- - Labs with 1 credit hour count for one-third of a 3-credit course.
- - For your overall result across semesters, use the CGPA calculator.
Common Uses
- - Checking your semester GPA before the official result.
- - Verifying the GPA on a result card or LMS portal.
- - Seeing how much one low grade affects your semester.
- - Getting a semester GPA to enter into the CGPA calculator.
- - Planning which courses to focus on before finals.
Common Mistakes
- - **Ignoring credit hours.** A 1-credit lab should not weigh the same as a 3-credit course.
- - **Assuming every university uses the same points.** HEC gives bands; universities fix their own points within them. Check your transcript key.
- - **Picking A+ when your university has no A+.** HEC has no A+. Use A.
- - **Leaving out an F.** An F counts as 0.00 and its credits still count in that semester.
- - **Including non-credit courses.** Pass/fail or zero-credit courses are not part of GPA.
- - **Multiplying GPA by 25 for percentage.** HEC's table is not linear: 3.00 equals 71%, not 75%.

Faqs
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA is your result for one semester. CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all semesters so far.
Which grading scale do Pakistani universities use?
Most follow HEC's 0.00–4.00 scale with the grade bands in its semester system guidelines, but each university fixes its own exact points. Check your transcript key.
Why does my GPA differ from my result card?
The calculator's dropdown uses US-style points (e.g. A- = 3.70, B+ = 3.30). If your university uses 3.67 and 3.33, small differences appear. Use your transcript's points.
Is there an A+ grade under HEC?
No. HEC's top grade is A (3.67–4.00). The dropdown's A+ gives 4.00, the same as A.
How do I convert GPA to percentage?
Use HEC's table: find your grade band and take its lowest percentage. For example, 3.15 is in the B+ band (3.01–3.33), which is 75%. Use your university's own formula if it publishes one.
Do lab courses count in GPA?
Yes. A lab counts with its own credit hours, usually 1. Enter it as a separate course.
What GPA do I need to avoid probation?
HEC sets 2.00 as the minimum CGPA for a BS degree. Universities decide their own probation rules, often linked to that 2.00 line.
