How to Calculate CGPA on the 4.0 Scale (with HEC Formula and Examples)

Quick Answer

CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all your semester GPAs: multiply each semester GPA by that semester's credit hours, add the results, then divide by your total credit hours. For example, if you got 3.20 over 18 credits and then 2.40 over 12 credits, your CGPA is (57.6 + 28.8) ÷ 30 = 2.88, not 2.80.

Overview

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) shows your overall result across every semester of your degree. Pakistani universities report it on a 0.00 to 4.00 scale, which is the standard the Higher Education Commission (HEC) recommends.

This calculator takes each semester's GPA and credit hours and returns two numbers: your CGPA and the total credit hours counted. Add as many semesters as you need with the "Add Semester" button.

Use it to check a transcript, see where you stand before applying for a scholarship or MS admission, or plan the GPA you need next semester.

How It Works

  1. Enter a name for the semester (optional, just for your reference).
  2. Enter the GPA shown on your result card for that semester (0.00 to 4.00).
  3. Enter the credit hours you took that semester. Most BS semesters carry 15 to 18 credit hours.
  4. Click "Add Semester" for each further semester, then calculate.

The tool multiplies each GPA by its credit hours, adds these "quality points", and divides by the total credit hours. The result is rounded to two decimals, which is how most transcripts show CGPA.

If you only have course grades and not a semester GPA, work out the semester GPA first with the GPA calculator.

Formula Summary

CGPA = Σ (semester GPA × semester credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours

Semester GPA = Σ (course grade point × course credit hours) ÷ total semester credit hours

Both formulas come from HEC's Policy Guidelines for the Uniform Semester System (section 14). HEC actually defines CGPA as the sum over every course taken in all semesters of (credit hours × grade points), divided by total credit hours. Weighting semester GPAs by their credit hours gives the same answer, as long as each semester GPA was itself credit-weighted.

Course-level example (one semester, 15 credit hours):

CourseCredit hoursGrade pointsCredit hours × points
Calculus34.0012.00
Programming43.0012.00
Physics33.339.99
English32.678.01
Islamic Studies22.004.00
Total1546.00

Semester GPA = 46.00 ÷ 15 = 3.07

Grade points per letter grade differ between universities, so use the points printed on your own transcript.

Worked Example

Ali has finished four semesters:

SemesterGPACredit hoursGPA × credit hours
13.201857.60
22.401228.80
33.501863.00
43.701555.50
Total63204.90

CGPA = 204.90 ÷ 63 = 3.2524 → 3.25

If Ali had just averaged the four GPAs, he would get (3.20 + 2.40 + 3.50 + 3.70) ÷ 4 = 3.20. That is wrong, because his weakest semester carried only 12 credit hours and should count for less.

On HEC's recommended equivalence table, 3.25 falls in the B+ band (3.01–3.33), which corresponds to a minimum of 75%.

Interpretation

HEC's guidelines set the minimum CGPA needed to complete a degree at 2.00 for BS and 2.50 for MS/MPhil. The Undergraduate Education Policy (V 1.1, from Fall 2023) keeps 2.00/4.00 as the minimum for an Associate Degree, and also for moving into the 5th semester of a BS with an Associate Degree. Universities are allowed to set higher requirements.

HEC recommends this GPA/CGPA-to-percentage equivalence (Policy Guidelines for the Uniform Semester System, section 13.1):

GradeGrade pointsPercentage (semester system)
A3.67 – 4.0085 and above
A-3.34 – 3.6680 – 84
B+3.01 – 3.3375 – 79
B2.67 – 3.0071 – 74
B-2.34 – 2.6668 – 70
C+2.01 – 2.3364 – 67
C1.67 – 2.0061 – 63
C-1.31 – 1.6658 – 60
D+1.01 – 1.3054 – 57
D0.10 – 1.0050 – 53
F0.00Below 50

HEC's rule is that a CGPA gets the minimum percentage of its band. A CGPA of 3.00 equals 71%, not 75%.

Universities can still use their own scales. For example, COMSATS University Islamabad notified that it adopted this HEC grading criteria for admissions from Fall 2021. Always check your university's own transcript key or examination rules before quoting a percentage on an application.

Editorial Note

This guide follows HEC's Policy Guidelines for the Implementation of Uniform Semester System and the Undergraduate Education Policy (V 1.1). The worked examples were checked by hand. Grading rules differ between universities, so your official transcript and your university's examination rules always come first. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Key Points

  • CGPA is a credit-weighted average. A simple average of semester GPAs is usually wrong.
  • HEC recommends a 0.00–4.00 scale for GPA and CGPA.
  • Minimum CGPA to complete a degree under HEC guidelines: 2.00 (BS), 2.50 (MS/MPhil).
  • Under HEC's equivalence table, CGPA 3.00 = 71%, 3.34 = 80%, 3.67 = 85%.
  • The later you are in your degree, the harder it is to move your CGPA, because each new semester is a smaller share of your total credits.
  • Your university's transcript is the final word. This calculator is for checking and planning.

Common Uses

  • Checking that the CGPA on your result card or transcript adds up.
  • Seeing whether you meet a scholarship, internship or MS/MPhil admission cut-off (many ask for a minimum CGPA).
  • Planning the semester GPA you need to reach a target CGPA before graduation.
  • Checking whether you are above the 2.00 minimum and safe from probation.
  • Getting a CGPA figure ready to convert to a percentage for job forms that ask for marks in percent.

Common Mistakes

  • Averaging GPAs without credit hours. A 12-credit semester should not count the same as an 18-credit one. See the worked example: 3.20 (simple average) vs 3.25 (correct).
  • Counting a repeated course twice. Under HEC guidelines, when an undergraduate repeats a course graded below C, both grades stay on the transcript but only the better one counts in the CGPA. Include that course's credits only once.
  • Dropping F grades. An F counts as 0.00 grade points and its credit hours still count until the course is repeated. Leaving it out makes your CGPA look higher than it is.
  • Including non-credit courses. Courses graded pass/fail or with zero credit hours do not count in CGPA. Leave them out.
  • Rounding semester GPAs first. Use the GPA exactly as printed on your result (usually two decimals). Rounding 3.46 to 3.5 in every semester adds up to a noticeable error.
  • Multiplying CGPA by 25 to get a percentage. This shortcut is not HEC's method. Under HEC's table, 3.00 is 71%, while ×25 gives 75%.

Faqs

How is CGPA different from GPA?

GPA is your result for one semester. CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all semesters so far. Your GPA can change a lot from one semester to the next, while your CGPA moves more slowly.

Is 3.0 CGPA good in Pakistan?

A 3.00 is a solid result, well above HEC's 2.00 minimum for a BS degree. On HEC's equivalence table it equals 71% (grade B). Some competitive scholarships and graduate programmes set higher cut-offs, so check the exact requirement.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

Use HEC's recommended table: find the band your CGPA falls in and take the lowest percentage of that band. For example, 3.25 is in the 3.01–3.33 band, so it is 75%. If your university publishes its own conversion formula, use that instead, and quote the source on your application.

What is the minimum CGPA to pass a BS degree?

HEC's semester system guidelines set 2.00 out of 4.00 as the minimum CGPA to complete a BS, and 2.50 for MS/MPhil. Universities may set higher requirements.

Can I raise my CGPA from 2.5 to 3.0?

Use this formula: required GPA = (target CGPA × total credits at graduation − current CGPA × credits completed) ÷ remaining credits.Example: you have 2.50 after 66 credits in a 132-credit BS. Required = (3.00 × 132 − 2.50 × 66) ÷ 66 = (396 − 165) ÷ 66 = 3.50 average over the remaining semesters. That is hard but possible.If you already have 96 credits at 2.50 with 36 left: (396 − 240) ÷ 36 = 4.33, which is above 4.00. You can't reach 3.00 that way, though repeating low-grade courses (where your university allows it) may help.

Do failed or repeated courses count in CGPA?

An F counts as 0.00 until you repeat the course. HEC's guidelines say the earlier F stays on your transcript. Undergraduates may repeat a course graded below C, and only the better grade is used for CGPA. Each institution limits how many courses you can repeat (HEC says fewer than 6 in an eight-semester programme).

Why doesn't my result match my transcript?

Check that you entered the exact semester GPAs and credit hours, including summer semesters. Leave out non-credit courses, and count repeated courses only once. Small differences can also come from rounding: universities usually calculate from course grade points, not rounded semester GPAs.
